Moss Point
Moss Point is a city located in Jackson County, just north of Pascagoula. Moss Point was originally home to Mohocti Indians. Once European settlers came to the area in the 16th century, explorers named the area where Pascagoula and Escatawpa rivers meet after the moss-covered oaks.
Moss Point was incorporated in 1901. It is the only city in Mississippi to become incorporated without first being chartered as a village or a town as Moss Point had a population of over 3,000 when incorporated.
The area was the center of the sawmill industry, the largest exporter of long leaf yellow pine lumber with as many as 9 sawmills in the early 1900’s. Other manufacturing industry in the area included glass, brick, and paper production. The paper manufactured here was coined Kreole Kraft paper due to its colour, causing the nearby railroad station and surrounding community to be called Kreole.
The Moss Point Historic District is listed on the National Registry for Historic Places, celebrating the city’s transition from a lumber town to a coastal getaway. Moss Point offers many outdoor recreation opportunities such as the Pascagoula River Audon Center, and the Gulf Coast Gator Ranch.
