D'Iberville
D’Iberville is located in Harrison County, Mississippi. French explorer Pierre LeMoyne, Sieur d’Iberville came to the Gulf Coast in 1699. He was a fur trader and soldier sent to the Gulf Coast to establish a French colony on the Mississippi to reinforce French claim on Louisiana. The area would later be under British and Spanish control until Mississippi joined the Union in 1817. The area more generally became known as d’iberville as the school system used the name in the 1920’s, until then had various names based on the post offices.
D’Iberville is bordered by Biloxi, but has always kept a distinct identity. The two areas were first connected by a pedestrian bridge in 1901, and a vehicular bridge in 1927. Interstate 110 connecting Biloxi and D’Iberville was constructed in 1975. The D’Iberville community fought against annexation as early as the 1930’s. In order to prevent pending annexation, four citizens formed the D’Iberville Civic Improvement Society to petition for incorporation. They were successful; the City of Biloxi did not annex D’Iberville in their 1979 expansion and D’Iberville was incorporated in 1988.
The first casino on the north side of the bay, The Scarlet Pearl, opened in D’iberville in 2015, over twenty years after gambling was legalized in the city.
