MGCNHA Frank Lloyd Wright's Birthday Celebration!

2017-07-04

Happy Birthday Frank!

On June 8, 2017, the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area celebrated the 150th Birthday of renowned architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) with an open house and lecture series at the Charnley-Norwood House in Ocean Springs.  Wright assumed credit for the Ocean Springs residence in his 1932 autobiography and again in his 1949 book, Genius and the Mobocracy.  From 1887 to 1893 he was employed by the architecture firm of Adler and Sullivan and was responsible for working on the firm’s residential designs during that period.

The celebration included informal tours of the recently restored house and grounds, as well as presentations on the relationship between Sullivan and Wright, a review of Wright’s work in Mississippi, and an Introduction to the Mississippi works of Architect Bruce Goff.  Goff (1904-1982) shares more than just a June 8th birthday with Wright.  Both designers were practitioners of the organic architecture movement, a design movement where a building is thought of forming an integral element of a whole.  According to a 1951 Life magazine article Goff was “one of the few US architects whom Frank Lloyd Wright considers creative...scorns houses that are ‘boxes with little holes’.”  Mississippi was fortunate enough to have several house designed by both Wright and Goff.

2017 also marks the 30th anniversary of the Charnley-Norwood House’s listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing element in the Sullivan-Charnley Historic District.
